World Geography — K–9
Course overview World Geography introduces students in kindergarten through ninth grade to the physical and human characteristics of Earth, developing geographic skills, spatial awareness, and cultural understanding. Lessons progress developmentally: early grades focus on basic spatial concepts and local environments; middle grades expand to continent-level studies and map skills; upper grades (grades 6–9) explore global patterns, human–environment interaction, and current events with increasing analytical depth.
Key goals
Build map and spatial literacy: reading maps, globes, scale, latitude and longitude, directional sense, and use of map tools.
Identify physical features: continents, oceans, major mountain ranges, rivers, climate zones, biomes, and ecosystems.
Understand human geography: population distribution, settlement patterns, cultural regions, languages, religion, economic activities, and urbanization.
Explore human–environment interaction: natural resources, land use, environmental challenges, and sustainability.
Develop regional knowledge: characteristics and comparisons of world regions, countries, and capitals.
Cultivate research and critical thinking: data interpretation, geographic inquiry, project-based learning, and presentation skills.
Connect to current events: how geography shapes global issues such as migration, trade, conflict, and climate change.
Grade-level scope and sequence
Kindergarten–Grade 2: Basic spatial concepts (near/far, above/below); classroom and school maps; neighborhood study; introduction to globe, continents, and oceans; simple cultural awareness (family, food, celebrations).
Grades 3–5: Map skills (symbols, scale, grid); major landforms and bodies of water; basic climate and biomes; introduction to continents and countries; regional case studies; human activities (agriculture, trade); simple data interpretation (charts, graphs).
Grades 6–8: World regions and comparative studies; physical systems (plates, weather patterns, ecosystems); population dynamics and migration; economic geography (industries, resources, globalization); geopolitical concepts (borders, governance); research projects using primary and secondary sources; introduction to GIS basics.
Grade 9: Synthesis of global geography with emphasis on spatial analysis, human–environment systems, and contemporary global challenges. Students evaluate causes and consequences of environmental change, analyze trade and development patterns, and produce extended projects or presentations.
